When Do You Need RF over Fiber?

Standard RG8/LMR coaxial cable loses signal fast. Beyond ~150 ft at UHF frequencies you're fighting insertion loss that active antenna combiners can't fully recover. At 500ft+ coax is essentially not viable without exotic, expensive cable. RF over fiber introduces near-zero transmission loss over any practical distance — ideal for large venues, stadiums, arenas, campuses, and multi-stage events.

Cable Loss Reference

Insertion loss at 700 MHz — the heart of wireless mic / IEM frequency ranges.

Cable Type100 ft300 ft500 ft1000 ft
RG58~5 dB~15 dB~25 dB XX
RG8X~3 dB~9 dB~15 dBX
LMR-400~1.5 dB~4.5 dB~7.5 dB~15 dB X
RF over Fiber<0.5 dB<0.5 dB<0.5 dB<1 dB OK

* RF over fiber loss is dominated by conversion electronics, not cable length. A 10km run has the same loss as 100ft.

Ideal Use Cases
  • Stadiums and arenas — antenna positions hundreds of feet from the rack room
  • Multi-building campuses where running coax isn't viable
  • Theatrical fly systems — antenna on a fly piece, rack stays on deck
  • Broadcast trucks where fiber infrastructure already exists
  • Any run over 150 ft where LMR-400 would be impractical
  • GNSS antenna distribution for microwave transport timing sync

How It Works

An RF-over-fiber link converts the RF signal (typically 400–900 MHz for wireless mics/IEMs) from coax to analog light on a single-mode or multi-mode fiber strand. A remote unit at the antenna position converts back to RF. Power is supplied via PoE or DC to the remote unit.

  • Frequency Range400–900 MHz (UHF)
  • Max DistanceUp to 10 km (single-mode)
  • Fiber TypeSM or MM, SC/APC or LC
  • Transport Loss<1 dB over full run
  • Tx/Rx Units1:1 or 1:N topologies

  • Single-mode fiber LC patch cables (various lengths)
  • PoE injector / DC power supply
  • Splitter/combiner as needed for multi-drop

What Is a DAS?

A Distributed Antenna System takes a signal source (wireless mic receiver, IEM transmitter, comms base) and distributes it to multiple antennas placed strategically across a space. The result: uniform RF coverage with no hot spots or dead zones. Active DAS adds gain at each antenna point; passive DAS uses splitters and relies on careful cable loss management.

When You Need DAS
  • Arena or stadium — single antenna can't cover 400 ft of stage
  • Multi-room conference or convention center
  • Theme parks and large outdoor footprints
  • Theatrical with complex staging configurations
  • Any show where a single omni antenna creates RF asymmetry issues
  • Broadcast remotes where cameras roam over a large area

Active vs Passive DAS

  • Active DASAmplified at each node
  • Best forLong runs, multiple floors
  • Passive DASSplitters + LNA at head
  • Best forCompact multi-zone
  • HybridFiber backbone + active nodes
  • Best forStadiums, mega-events

What's in the Kit

  • Active antenna combiners / splitters
  • Helical, cardioid, and omni remote antennas
  • Antenna mast / stand hardware
  • LMR-400 and RG8X cable bundles
  • Labeled tour case packaging
  • Optional RF over fiber integration

Why Network Audio?

A standard Cat6 cable replaces 48 channels of analog snake. Dante and AES67 provide sub-millisecond latency, automatic routing, and redundancy on standard IP infrastructure. Scale from 2 channels to 512+ without re-cabling. Our Focusrite RedNet, Digital Audio Denmark, and Netgear AV switching infrastructure is production-tested on major broadcast and touring events.

Ideal Scenarios
  • Multi-console shows sharing inputs over a network
  • FOH-to-monitor splits via Dante instead of analog
  • Broadcast feed distribution to multiple record stations
  • Interfacing Avid MADI to Dante ecosystems
  • Remote stage boxes via CAT6 or fiber SFP
  • Microwave transport between buildings or across venues

Microwave Transport Kit

Our proprietary Dante and AES67 over microwave system provides point-to-point audio transport over line-of-sight wireless links — perfect for cross-venue splits, inter-building audio, or any run where fiber isn't practical. Timing sync is handled via GNSS (with optional RF-over-fiber GNSS distribution) or Iridium satellite for locations without clear sky view.

  • ProtocolDante / AES67
  • TransportMicrowave (5 GHz)
  • RangeUp to 500m LOS
  • Latency<5ms end-to-end
  • ChannelsUp to 64 bidirectional
  • Timing SyncGNSS or Iridium satellite

Proprietary — Built In-House

Distributed RF Coordination
at Production Scale

The Freq Show puts a live spectrum view in the hands of any coordinator on your network — without them needing to be physically near an RF scanner. Each node is a custom-engineered, self-contained proprietary antenna array and computing platform built in-house by Eighty32. Designed for large shows where a single RF coordinator and a single scanner can't cover the whole footprint.

How It Works

Proprietary scanner nodes — custom-engineered antenna arrays and computing platforms housed in ruggedized enclosures — are deployed at strategic positions across the venue and connected to the show LAN. Each node streams live spectrum data to a central server. Any connected workstation on the network can access the full spectrum view through a browser interface. Deploy as few as 5 or as many as 100+ units depending on venue scale.

  • Node HardwareProprietary compute + SDR platform
  • AntennaCustom-designed wideband array
  • EnclosureRuggedized field enclosure
  • Frequency Range400 MHz – 6 GHz
  • Access MethodBrowser / LAN
  • Simultaneous UsersUnlimited on LAN

Who Needs This
  • Large festivals — multiple stages, multiple coordinators sharing spectrum data
  • Sports broadcasts where RF teams are spread across a large venue
  • Convention centers and arenas where a single scanner can't cover the space
  • Any show where IM and interference monitoring needs to happen continuously, not just at setup

We Take On Custom Projects

Not every production fits a standard category — and that's exactly where we're most useful. If you have a problem that doesn't have an obvious off-the-shelf solution, tell us about it. We've built proprietary systems from scratch, reverse-engineered broken workflows on the fly, and specced infrastructure for situations nobody had a rental catalog entry for. Whether it's a one-of-a-kind venue, an unusual signal path, a tight timeline, or something nobody has tried before — reach out. If we can solve it, we will. If we can't, we'll tell you that too.

Tell Us About Your Project

Ready to talk about your show?

Every production is different. We'll build a solution around yours.

Chris and Blanca DeBrizzio, Co-Founders of Eighty32

Chris DeBrizzio founded Eighty32 after years of working across the full breadth of live audio — broadcast, corporate, major sporting events, and large-scale music festivals. Through that work, a pattern became clear: productions were constantly cobbling together gear from multiple vendors, improvising system designs on-site, and spending prep time solving problems that should have been solved before the truck arrived.

Eighty32 exists to change that. Every kit we ship is pre-configured, tested, and labeled. Every system design starts with a conversation about what your show actually needs — not what's available. We stock the gear that actually gets used at the top level of touring and broadcast: Wisycom, Digital Audio Denmark, Focusrite, Avid, Netgear AV, Shure — and we build proprietary systems, like the Freq Show, when off-the-shelf tools don't cut it.

We're based in Las Vegas — the crossroads of touring, residency, and convention production. When the world's biggest shows come to town, we're already here.

Disciplines
